    BNI feedback

    For those of you that know and those that don't I am a member of a local BNI Chapter in Colorado, Rocky Mountain Business Builders.

     

    Outside of the strong networking that is done in the chapters and between them, one of the unsung benefits of BNI is education and training.  BNI has a lot available in that area--ranging from books, training sessions and in-chapter groups such as mentoring sessions.

     

    Personal growth is a big part of our business growth.  Our businesses—whether they be service or product-oriented, conventional or ones that leverage the efforts of others such as Network Marketing—and their success, directly pivots on our ability to grow personally.

     

    I used to read and listen to a lot of motivational material, attend group sessions and seminars and somewhere along the way I fell off that self-improvement path.  It took my picking up some new material that I had recently learned about to remind me of how I had lost my way and when.  Many of you may not even have noticed.  That’s okay, but I did and I realize how I must change for my business to change.

    I can sit here and make excuses such as I am too busy to build my business and in some ways that may be true but I know that that, in itself, starts with commitment.

     

    Our careers, our businesses are more that just what we do for a living.  We are in the service of others and are here to benefit others. You don’t have to agree with me if you don’t want to but that is the way it is.   That is what is truly rewarding about serving others.  That is what makes each day important and allows us to sleep well at night.  It comes down to not how much money we make but how many lives we impact and change for the better.

     

    Think about you and your business.  Is your business growing?  If it is, is it because you are just doing business right or is your business growing because you are growing?  Are you changing lives?  Are you getting better?

     

    If you are at a place in your life where you feel you and your business aren’t going anywhere and/or you have grown stagnant and plateaued, look within.  Maybe it is  you that need to start growing again.    I know I do.

    Try hiring a Travel Agent to work for you...

    ! Leveraging Idea.

    Knowing that your YTB Business is about travel, sell travel.   If you are busy and understand the importance and power of leveraging, use it.  Hire someone to work for you and have them help you sell travel.
    Just think about it.

    Publishing to a Microsoft Live Space Blog via email

    Yes, it is amazing how effective technology is if you know how to use it.

    Here is an example of how Windows Live allows you to publish via an email address to your web blog. Now, 'Live isn't the the only one, there are many web-based programs that offer the same or similar functionality.   I sent this to the email address in my Email Publish Settings.

    Why this can be helpful is if you have a great idea on the fly and you happen to be on your Blackberry or iPhone, Treo or whatever gadget you have, you can just shoot your idea to your blog. Simple huh?

    Just another update

    A lot going on.  I have not been back here in awhile.  I am working on some marketing projects for both MTD Marketing Inc and for our YTB Travel Business, Premier Total Travel. 

    I have looked into some alternative email applications such as Emma.  I am likely to replace Constant Contact with Emma.  It excels in functionality and ease of use.  Email as you know is a great way to build relationships and to stay in front of your customers and contacts.  More about this later.

    As far as YTB is concerned, the company is growing by leaps and bounds.  My focus is on learning more about the travel industry and teaching my team to sell travel and to reproduce that in their teams.  Besides, this business is all about selling travel.  I just got my CLIA card and plan do really market Cruises to my BNI Networking Group and to my team.  I am also doing more to promote my website, www.premiertotaltravel.com.  

    Recently, I added an information page which is available at www.premiertotaltravel.info.  It is a secondary site provided by travel media.  It provides us tools such as autoresponder emails that help Cheri and I stay in front of our prospective RTAs.  It also include links to various sections of our travel website and valuable information about our business.

    Remember what you are building in Network Marketing

    A great many of us that are involved in Network Marketing--no matter what the company--need to constantly remind ourselves of why we are doing what we are doing and what we are trying to accomplish. What ever the case we are using leveraging to build a strong business. Leveraging is what makes it possible to sell a bunch of products and services with less effort.

    Example:

    1 person could go out and sell 1000 products and take forever to do it (and likely be tired afterwards) or he/she can build a team of 100 that only sell 10 each. This is over-simplified I know, but you get the point.

    Remember that what you are trying to build is more than a network of people, it is a "Network of Businesses." The true power of leveraging and the efforts within comes from you duplicating your business. Whether you are a YTB Referring Travel Agent, Mary Kay Consultant, Pampered Chef Consultant, Avon Consultant, etc, etc (the list of independent businesses is way too long to mention everyone ) no matter what, you want your business associates working their business and selling your/their product (s).  It is all a waste if they are not.

    Imagine if all the McDonald's franchises out there just sat there and didn't sell hamburgers.

    So remember that while you are building your business, work your business and help your team work their business. It will make for a stronger and more productive network.

    Building relationships when you don't know what to talk about

    Have you ever felt like, "I know I need to talk to my customer or prospect but just don't know what to talk about?" Believe it or not small-talk is an important relationship management tool. When you don't think you have anything to say use this formula:

    F.O.R.D : Family, Occupation, Recreation and Dreams.

    If you just ask about those things--subjects most likely dear to their heart, your customer, contact, acquaintance or friend will have lots to fill your ears with.

    Just taking an interest in those things will improve your relationship with that person and open a great many doors of opportunity in the months ahead. You may also find out you have a lot in common.

    YTB Hints - Working the Email Marketing Game

    Many of us that are RTA's with YTB know that the ATM (Automated Travel Marketing) email engine is being upgraded. Many of the main ISPs (AOL, MSN, HOTMAIL, YAHOO, GMAIL and COMCAST) have very good SPAM filters that make it near impossible to get your recipients their "Deals and Steals Newsletters." Here are a few pointers that will help you while we wait for the ATM upgrade process to be finished.
    1. Before you add your contact's info to the ATM, let them know in advance that a invitation/confirmation email will be coming. Tell them to look for it in their SPAM or BULK mail box. 90% of the time it will be found there instead of their INBOX.
    2. Add their contact info through the ATM input panel.
    3. Have your prospect look for the email. If the Invitation is in the SPAM/BULK folder instruct them to MOVE the email into their INBOX. Make sure they turn off any pop-up or spam blockers they are using. Yahoo, MSN and AOL all have these in their programs. If the blockers are not temporarily disabled, the pop-up that displays that they have elected to receive the Newsletter will not display and they will not be officially subscribed. This will result in a PENDING status to continue to be displayed next to their info in your ATM panel.
    4. If all these steps are completed and they click on the link in the email to accept the newsletter, they will receive a confirmation email immediately.
    5. Once the new Email Engine is upgraded, your contacts should be good to go. :)

    On a separate but similar note, with regards to building your business and marketing it, do not rely heavily on your ATM.  It is important to know that as much as 30% of emails never reach their destination when sent in bulk.  That is the national average.

    Consider other methods of contact:  your travel parties, individual emails, brochures, letters and notes and the most effective method of all time, a good old fashioned phone call to just say hello.

    How do we move above the line?

    The key to improving ourselves and keeping a positive mindset ("above the line") is easily summed up by a few things:

    • Read, read, read and read more.  Listen to self-improvement audio recordings.
    • Surround yourself with the right people.
    • Affirmations

    Reading books, articles, RSS Feeds and listening to recordings is the oldest and still best way to get and stay "above the line."   It's not to say that any one author is better than another or more helpful than another but staying informed and learning is still the best way to stay ahead.

    There are many, many, resources out there by authors ranging from Zig Zigler (great sayings and insights) to Robert Kiyosaki (my favorite).   The landscape is filled with people that have much more experience than the bulk of us and more than willing to share it with us.   

    I remember the first audio tape I listened to was by Dr. Al Zimmerman.     It really started the wheels in my head turning.   He talked a lot about affirmations and surrounding yourself with positive people but no one writer has had more of an impact on me that Robert Kiyosaki.  

    The first book I read by him was Rich Dad Poor Dad.  I still recommend it to most business people I talk to as a great read.  Robert Kiyosaki touches on the various types of people out there in this book but elaborates on them in his Cashflow Quadrants book.  In Rich Dad he speaks of his relationship with his fraternal dad and his "rich dad" who was father to one of his close friends.  His "rich dad" made a huge impression on him and helped steer his perception and attitude about business and money in a better direction.  I will talk further about this in later entries but wanted to mention this book and the importance of reading, listening to audio pieces, etc.  If you like, read the book and satisfy your curiosity.

    Surrounding yourself with positive people is extremely important as well.  If there is one thing that can definitely keep you from staying above the line it is surrounding yourself with people that "bring you down."  How many times have we been in a conversation with a good friend or close family member that after you are out of that conversation, the tone for the rest of the day is more than just somber.  It is downright depressing.  

    It is hard to sell the idea of divorcing yourself from these kinds of relationships but it is something you need to start doing.  I am not suggesting you stop being someone's friend or lose contact with your family.  It is absolutely the opposite.  I am merely saying that you minimize the negativity from these sources (if an only if that is the problem) and grow your circle of friends--those that are more positive and constructive for your growth.    

    Successful people notice that over time their circle of friends change as they grow in career and business.  Do you think that is because they have more money or are more influential?  No, it is because this new circle is comprised of people that are drawn to them and have a positive impact on them.   

    As you grow you too you will notice this.    Some of your previous friends and close family members will likely evolve too just by watching the changes they see in you. Not everyone will change though so don't let that bother you.  Some people just don't, can't or won't change but you are and that's all that matters.

    There is an interesting statistic out there that states that the top 4-6% of the population out there represents the most financially successful and they hold most of the wealth. It is said that if you took all their wealth away and distributed it evenly among the masses that in time they would get all of that back.  This is because they will still be doing the same things they always have been--the right things.  These are the things that have made them successful--the things we are talking about right now and are reflected in the learning materials we frequently reference.

    There is also a "gray area" between those that are extremely successful and those that are not.  This "gray zone" is made up of people in transition.  They are not quite yet financially successful but have the potential in them necessary to become so.  They are talented, driven and self-motivated but merely need a little push or some mentoring to get them to the next level.  From this group of people will and do come those that are slowly becoming part of the "success channel"--a sector of people that are starting to wake up, see their potential and move on to greater things.  They help others, they grow and they become better people.      If you are reading this, you are likely part of this group of motivated entrepreneurs.    These people have the potential to change the dynamic of business and the world in general.  These people will influence the next generation.  We will touch on this later.

    Affirmations.  I love these. Affirmations are statements that you write that represent what you want to become or goals you want to achieve.  You write them as if those things have already happened--as if fact.   These statements are very powerful.  

    Every day we are bombarded by influences that cause us to doubt ourselves and believe we can't achieve our goals or be successful in what we want to do well in.  We are programmed by these influences at a  very early age.  We are impacted by family, friends and personal experiences that cause us to think the way we do.  We become programmed and end up failing, not because we want to fail but because we believe it is normal.  We accept our lives as they are and resolve to settling with everything in it even though deep down we know our circumstances are not what we want.

    The key is to break that trend and reprogram your thinking.  It is like erasing a prerecorded tape or reformatting your hard-drive (for most of us in this modern computer-aged generation).  You have to start from scratch--a clean slate as to say.  How do we do this?  Affirmations.

    Try these examples:

    I enjoy spending time with my family.  Because this is important to me, It is easy to make time to be away from work and my business by effectively working my schedule and tasks.  This is great because it brings balance to my life.

    This is good if you want to spend more time with your family and maybe are challenged by a heavy work schedule.  Perhaps you are feeling the drain from not spending enough time with your family and work is creating tension at home.

    I enjoy making $200,000 a year.

    This is a relative statement.  Perhaps you are interested in making more money. How much?  That is subjective.   You should base it on what appeals to you.  This could be $1 million or just $500 more per month.

    I enjoy exercise.  I do so 3x a week.  I enjoy my (walks, runs, soccer, volleyball, etc) activities.  It makes me feel 100% better.  I really notice the difference.  I am glad I am doing it.  I feel better about myself, my life, my relationship with my spouse.   I look and feel great.  

    You can elaborate on this but essentially if you want to exercise and feel better, start telling yourself how much you enjoy it in the morning or afternoon (whenever you do it).   Start repairing that self-image inside and out.

    It is a lot easier to quit smoking than I thought.  I am glad I am doing it.  I feel so much more healthy.

    This is a good one if you want to quit smoking.

    There are many more you can come up with.  Use your imagination and apply it.  I bet you didn't realize you were so creative.

    Affirmations are very powerful. No matter what your goal or desire is if you start talking to yourself in a way that is positive--and as if what you are saying is already true--you will believe it and live that very way.  Write down 10 of them and say them for at least 21 days.  This is the point in time when any activity becomes habit.   If you tell yourself something for at least 21 days you will likely believe it.  

    Start taking actions to make those statements into a reality.  If you want to start exercising, tell yourself how good it makes you feel and start exercising.  If you want to stop smoking, start telling yourself how good you feel by doing so and take actions to stop.  Thought without action no mater how positive, is still thought but, you will be amazed how much impact your affirmations will have on making your goals happen.

    In summary, if you read and listen to audio pieces, surround yourself with positive and influential people and say affirmations on a daily basis you will definitely be taking powerful steps toward staying above the line.

    Do you live above or below the line?

    The following pertains to the attitude you have, how you live your life and deal with your relationships. A creator lives above the line and a reactor below.

    Where do you spend most of your time?

    Creator

    You ask yourself and say things like:

    "How did this happen? I know I am part of the problem. What part did I play?"
    "What can I do differently the next time?
    "What do I need to do to make things happen? What actions do I need to take to meet my objectives and achieve my dreams and goals?"
    "How can I be a better person?"
    "I can always learn something new [from this meeting, presentation, book, etc] even if it is something I have heard before." No one person has a monopoly on knowledge.

    When living above the line, you are in control and proactive about how you approach work, tasks, relationships, love, and life in general. You take responsibility (no matter how much or how little) for things that happen to you? You walk the walk and follow through with what you start and you finish it. You keep your commitments and your promises. When things change, you make adjustments and you learn from your mistakes. You learn patience and learn to be slow to anger.

    You take responsibility for your financial situation and take steps to improve it.

    Actions:
    You read self-improvement books and listen to tapes/CDs. You attend seminars when you can.
    You remove yourself from "friends" that bring you down when you are around them. It is hard I know but you need to do it. If they won't change, don't make them. You change for the better because you want to.
    You say sorry when you are wrong and at times when you need to even if you aren't wrong.
    You eat well, you exercise, you spend time with your family. You love and live well because you earn it.

    You make your own opportunities. You fail forward fast--the more mistakes you make the more successes you will have.

    Ask questions and say things like:
    Why did this happen to me? [Victim stance--not really caring how it happened]
    "What are you (or people in general) going to do for me?" [entitlement attitude]
    "I don't deserve this. It's not my fault." [Passing blame and shame onto others]

    You justify your behavior by saying and thinking things like:

    "I can never have a clean office because..."
    "I can never have fun with my friends or family because...."
    "I can't take advantage of that opportunity because..."
    "I can never take a vacation because..."
    "I can't ever have a better life because..."

    "...I don't have time to do."
    "...I don't have money."
    "...my boss wants me to do this project."
    "...I can't take time off."

    "I will wait till later."
    "I'll get around to it."

    No matter how you slice it, they are all excuses. These are symptoms of those that live below the line. You and your whole life situation is because of someone else.

    Actions:
    Well, to be honest, you don't have time to do anything. You hide in your house or behind your work. You make yourself believe that those long hours at work are for your family or your betterment. Are you really accomplishing what you want or are you just using long hours as an excuse?

    Reactor

    Summary:
    No matter what your situation is you can change it--if you don't like it as it is today. No environment, traumatic event or bad-upbringing can bring you down unless you let it. Many past experiences and disappointments can and will make you feel hopeless or angry but you can change that if you choose to. Although you may have every reason to be angry, frustrated or sad, you shouldn't let it be your ball and chain nor pass that on to others. You should share it with those that care about you--they need to know where you are coming from--but, get help and counseling if you need it and move on. You are stronger than you think and deserve everything in this world and the next if you want it and are willing to work for it.

    So, what side of the line do you want to be on?
